Do I Qualify for a German Pension Refund?
If you’re a non-EU citizen preparing to leave Germany — or if you’ve already left and now live outside the European Union — you may be eligible for a refund of your German pension contributions.
To qualify, two key conditions must be met:
- You must no longer reside in the EU, and
- At least 24 months must have passed since your last contribution to the German pension fund.
But don’t worry – we can already start preparing your application now, so everything is ready once the waiting period has passed. This way, you’ll save time and avoid unnecessary delays.
Country-Specific Conditions
For some nationalities, additional rules apply, depending on social security agreements between Germany and your home country:
- USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, India, South Korea, the Philippines, Albania, Moldova, North Macedonia, Uruguay:
You may only qualify for a refund if your German pension account contains less than 5 years of contributions. - Japan:
If you currently live in Japan, your contributions must be under 5 years.
If you reside in another non-EU country (e.g. Canada), this limit does not apply. - Former Yugoslav countries:
You can only receive a refund (before retirement age) if you live in a non-EU country outside the former Yugoslav region – for example, the USA. - Israel:
Israeli citizens can only apply for a refund (before retirement age) if they live outside Israel, e.g. in New Zealand.

How Much Could You Get Back from your German Pension?
During your time working in Germany, a portion of your monthly salary – typically 9.3% of your gross income – was automatically deducted and paid into the German state pension system.
